”It is absolutely amazing and very overwhelming to receive such recognition. I especially think it’s great to see that clothing is recognized on an equal footing with other craftsmanship – it makes me really proud,” says Freya Dalsjø, and continues: “This legacy really means a lot to me in a very special way, precisely because it is not just fashion-specific recognition, but it is given by an art fund that assesses all kinds of crafts. It also reflects my own way of working with fashion – as something that is and can be a lot more than just beautiful to look at.”
Freya Dalsjø studied at the clothing line at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 2009 to 2010, before she founded her brand in her own name in 2012.
Among the reasoning for awarding the grant, the Danish Arts Foundation says:
”Freya Dalsjø challenges beauty, reimagines classical elements in a new way, and have a convincing ability to surprise and develop innovative crafts. She is not afraid to kick to the conventions and reminds us what clothing design can also – always with the sublime crafts intact. Freya Dalsjø’s design wants something, moves and reflects society.”
